1. Shoot from a slight angle, not straight down

2. Keep a size reference in frame

Leave the fork, spoon, or your hand near the plate. These are familiar objects of known size, and they give the estimate a real-world scale to anchor to. A bowl photographed alone could be espresso-cup small or mixing-bowl huge.

3. Separate what you can

If it’s easy, nudge foods apart before shooting so nothing important hides behind the rice. You don’t need to plate like a restaurant. Just make sure each item is visible.

4. Add what the camera can’t see

Oil, butter, dressing, sugar in your coffee. These are close to invisible but calorically loud. A tablespoon of olive oil is around 120 calories with essentially no volume on the plate. If you cooked with a big glug of oil, tell the app.

5. Sanity-check the number
